What Is X-Ray Film Recycling?

X-ray film recycling is the environmentally responsible process of recovering valuable silver and other materials from used radiographic films. Medical, dental, veterinary, and industrial x-ray films contain a silver halide emulsion that, when properly processed, yields high-purity silver — a precious metal worth recovering.

Rather than sending old x-ray films to a landfill — where silver and chemical compounds can leach into soil and groundwater — professional x-ray film recycling ensures safe, compliant disposal while putting money back in your pocket. Every ton of x-ray film contains approximately 10–20 troy ounces of recoverable silver.

For healthcare facilities, x-ray film recycling also satisfies HIPAA requirements for the destruction of protected health information (PHI). A certified recycler provides documentation proving the films — and the patient data they contain — were securely destroyed.

Why Recycle X-Ray Films?

Whether you're a hospital clearing decades of stored films, a dental practice upgrading to digital, or an industrial facility managing NDT radiographs — x-ray film recycling is the smart, compliant, and profitable choice.

♻️

Environmental Responsibility

X-ray films contain silver and chemical compounds that can contaminate soil and groundwater if landfilled. Recycling diverts hazardous waste from landfills and recovers precious metals sustainably.

💰

Revenue from Silver Recovery

Used x-ray films contain valuable silver. Medical x-ray film averages 1.5–2% silver by weight. At current market prices, a typical hospital cleanout can generate thousands of dollars in silver value.

🏥

HIPAA Compliance

Patient x-rays contain protected health information. Federal law requires that PHI be securely destroyed. Certified x-ray film recycling satisfies HIPAA destruction mandates with documented proof.

📋

Regulatory Compliance

The EPA classifies improperly disposed x-ray film chemicals as hazardous waste. Professional recycling keeps your facility in compliance with EPA, state environmental, and OSHA regulations.

🏢

Free Up Valuable Space

Many facilities store decades of accumulated x-ray films in basements and warehouses. Recycling clears this space for productive use while generating revenue from otherwise idle inventory.

📜

Certificates of Destruction

A reputable x-ray film recycler provides a Certificate of Destruction for every pickup — legal documentation that your facility properly disposed of the film and any PHI it contained.

Types of X-Ray Film We Recycle

We accept virtually all types of silver-bearing film for recycling. If it has a silver halide emulsion, we can process it. Here are the most common film types we recycle.

High Silver

Medical X-Ray Film

Full-size and mammography films from hospitals, imaging centers, and clinics. Typically has the highest silver content of all film types.

High Silver

Dental X-Ray Film

Intraoral periapical, bitewing, and panoramic films from dental and orthodontic practices. Smaller size but excellent silver concentration per unit weight.

High Silver

Industrial NDT Film

Non-destructive testing radiographs from aerospace, pipeline, weld inspection, and structural engineering applications.

High Silver

Veterinary X-Ray Film

Radiographs from animal hospitals and veterinary clinics — same base composition as medical film with comparable silver content.

Medium Silver

Lithographic Film

Film used in printing and graphic arts for platemaking. Contains silver halide emulsion similar to x-ray film.

Varies Silver

MRI & CT Film

Dry-processed laser films from MRI and CT scanners. Silver content varies by manufacturer and era — older films tend to yield more.

Medium Silver

Microfilm & Microfiche

Archival microfilm and microfiche from libraries, government offices, and corporate records storage. Contains recoverable silver.

Medium Silver

Photographic Film & Paper

Professional photographic negatives and print paper with silver halide emulsion. Acceptable for recycling alongside x-ray film.

How Silver Is Recovered from X-Ray Film

X-ray films use a silver halide emulsion to capture radiographic images. When the film is developed, the unexposed silver halide is washed away — but a significant amount of metallic silver remains embedded in the gelatin layer. This is the silver we recover.

Our state-of-the-art silver recovery process uses environmentally controlled methods to strip the silver-bearing emulsion from the polyester film base. The silver is then refined to .999 fine purity and sold on the commodities market, with proceeds shared with our clients.

The remaining film base is also recycled — typically converted into polyester pellets for manufacturing use. Nothing goes to waste.

X-Ray Film Recycling FAQ

Everything you need to know about recycling x-ray films, from how the process works to what your old films are worth.

How much are my old x-ray films worth?+

The value of your x-ray films depends on quantity, type, and current silver market prices. Medical x-ray films contain approximately 1.5–2% silver by weight. A typical hospital cleanout of 500+ lbs of film can generate $500–$5,000+. Contact us for a free estimate based on your specific inventory.

Is x-ray film recycling HIPAA compliant?+

Yes — when performed by a certified recycler like X Ray Film Disposal. HIPAA requires that protected health information (PHI) on x-ray films be securely destroyed. We provide a Certificate of Destruction for every pickup, documenting that all patient information was permanently eliminated in compliance with HIPAA regulations.

What types of x-ray film can be recycled?+

We recycle virtually all silver-bearing film including medical x-rays, dental x-rays, veterinary x-rays, industrial NDT radiographs, lithographic film, MRI/CT film, microfilm, microfiche, and photographic negatives. If you're unsure whether your film qualifies, contact us — we can identify and evaluate it.

How does the x-ray film pickup process work?+

We provide free nationwide pickup. After you request a quote, we schedule a pickup at your convenience. Our team arrives at your facility, packs and labels the film, maintains chain-of-custody documentation, and transports everything to our certified recycling facility. You don't need to sort, box, or prepare the film in advance.

How long has x-ray film been recyclable?+

X-ray film has been recycled for its silver content for over 60 years. The silver recovery industry matured significantly in the 1970s–1980s as silver prices rose and environmental regulations tightened. Today, x-ray film recycling is a well-established, regulated industry with standardized processes for both silver recovery and data destruction.

Can I recycle x-ray films that are very old or damaged?+

Absolutely. We accept x-ray films regardless of age or condition — including films from the 1950s and earlier. In fact, older films often contain more silver than modern films because early manufacturing processes used heavier emulsion coats. Water-damaged, moldy, or deteriorated films are all accepted.

What happens to the x-ray film after recycling?+

The silver halide emulsion is chemically separated from the polyester film base. The silver is refined to .999 purity and sold to precious metals markets. The polyester base is cleaned and recycled into pellets for manufacturing new products. Nothing goes to waste — the entire film is recycled.

Do you offer x-ray film recycling near me?+
